Death Hag Sticker of the Day - Steven Parent's grave.

Steven Earl Parent

February 12, 1951 - August 9, 1969

"Please don't hurt me.  I won't say anything."

Steven Parent is the young man who became the first of the victims of the Tate murders on the night of August 8, 1969.  

He lived with his family in this home in El Monte.

Annnndddd this would be his mailbox.

He worked at Jonas Miller Stereo on Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills.

At around 11:45 that Friday night, Parent drove to the house on Cielo Drive to William Garretson and "sell him a clock-radio."

About 45 minutes after he arrived, Parent got in his car and pulled up to the gate of the property in an attempt to leave.  At that very moment, Tex Watson hopped over the fence and ordered Parent to "HALT!"

Parent became the first of the victims.

Tex slashed Parent's wrist sending his wrist-watch into the back seat, then shot him 4 times.

Since Parent's body was the first discovered at the crime scene, the original documentation from the case calls it the "Parent" homicides.  Not Tate, not Polanski or Folger.

James Earl Ray Deathaversary April 23, 2015

A few years ago it came to my attention via my friend Joe Walker, that James Earl Ray, the man who murdered Dr. Martin Luther King, once lived in Hollywood.

Circa 1967, Ray was a resident of the Gerswin Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard.

Joe clarifies, "An ad in a paper called the LA Free Press which was where "swingers" met.  After he was arrested they went way back into his life because, while he agreed to plead guilty, he later recanted saying he was put up to it, etc.  I am attaching a clipping from a report on Ray, along with the address of the Gershwin and the PO box he used in Alhambra - coincidentally now a nursery school."

This building had another notable resident, fiction-writer

The ever changing face of Hollywood - when developers opted to destroy other buildings on the street to build a Petco, there was a terrific rare view of an old auto repair shop sign.

Sad, this is almost like archaeology here.

Another fatality of vaginal rejuvenation - the X-Spot porn theater/shop where Nick Stahl, the Terminator 3 actor, was arrested.

Tragical.

Sal Mineo 39th Deathaversary February 12, 2015

Glactor Sal Mineo was murdered on this date in 1976 in the alley of his apartment building on Holloway Drive in West Hollywood.

The crime went unsolved for almost 2 years.

January 1994 Karen Silkwood's Ditch

My January of 1994 I moved to California from Chicago.  My dad drove with me in the U-haul, with everything I own in the back, and dad, my dog Oso and I in the front.

We stopped in Oklahoma City to see where Will Rogers is buried.  Completely acceptable.

After that I took control and drove 50 miles north.  I explained the story of Karen Silkwood.

Dad:  Wait, you are taking us 100 miles out of the way to see a ditch?

Me:  But dad, it's Karen Silkwood's ditch.

Dad:  You're kidding.

Me:  No.  It's what I do, dad.

Inside the Wonderland Murder House Crime Scene VIDEO

A couple of years ago I was given access to the house on Wonderland Drive where the infamous murders involving porn star John Holmes took place in 1981.

Weirdly, when the Val Kilmer movie Wonderland came out on DVD, the extra features included with the film included the actual footage from the crime scene, with the victims still in it.

It seems that this case is one of the first that documented a crime scene by video.

And there it was, for your entertainment, as an extra feature.

I invited my pal Mike Dorsey to come with me.  Camera in hand he shot and edited our trek into the actual crime scene footage.

January 3, 2015 Jack Ruby's 47th Deathaversary

On this date in 1967, Jack Ruby, the killer of Lee Harvey Oswald, died of Keeansah in Dallas.

The killing of Oswald either

1. Saved the country millions of dollars by avoiding a trial

2. Showed compassion for Jackie Kennedy a gave her a break.

3. Gave exhausting people something to prattle on about for over 50 years.

Ugh.

While in Dallas over last October, my new friends Shane and Paula showed us so many of the cool relevant Death Haggy spots in town.

We went to the Courthouse where Ruby shot Oswald.

We saw an opportunity to slip down the driveway thingy when the gate opened and someone drove in.

We got about 20 feet in when the cow in the car got out and told us we couldn't peek.

So we went to Lee's grave instead.

Michael Rockefeller disappeared in 1961 Cannibalism Earworm

This is a new one on me.  Michael Rockefeller was consumed by "savages" in 1961?

He was the son of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and he went missing on a jungle expedition in November of 1961.

His body was never found.  He was legally pronounced dead in 1964

NETFLIX is releasing a documentary about it.
